Young Woman Competition
The purpose of the competition is to identify ambassadors to promote the Sydney Royal Easter Show, and Agricultural Shows across New South Wales. The program is designed to develop regional young women, to benefit the individual, the local show society, and their communities. Interview, presenting, and networking skills are all strengthened. This can create new life opportunities for participants.

Applications for the 2023 Yass Young Woman will open in June 2023. Applicants have the opportunity to become an Ambassador for Yass Valley and the surrounding agricultural community. Applicants require a strong knowledge in agriculture, current affairs and an understanding of the local community. Applicants will also be judged on personality, community involvement and personal presentation.
2023 Young Woman - Grace Armour
Grace grew up on a 3000-acre sheep/cattle property at Bookham, 25 minutes from Yass, and has always enjoyed helping out on the 6th Generation farm.
During secondary schooling, Grace studied agriculture and primary industries, as well as showing various animals at country shows including poultry and horses.
While at University and then through COVID, Grace worked full-time in shearing sheds as a roustabout and developed a love and fascination for the wool industry. It also provided her with opportunities to talk to different farmers in the region about issues and their ideas for the future of agriculture.
Grace now owns her own 20-acre block, which has the foundations for an orchard already in place, and she hopes to expand this. She’d like to buy some cattle/sheep to create more profit from her property. “As it stands, I spend a lot of time returning to the family farm to help out with work such as weaning lambs over summer and mustering sheep for crutching”, says Grace.
As a primary school teacher, Grace is noticing more and more the lack of understanding or interest in agriculture with students. “Our livelihood depends on the agriculture industry, so I believe it is imperative to teach future generations about it. This is why it is a goal of mine to bring exciting programs and activities to students in government schools, to engage them and possibly foster a love of the land and all the opportunities available through agriculture.”
Grace is excited about the opportunities that the Young Woman competition will give her, meeting like-minded and inspirational young women and celebrate their successes. She will attend Young Woman Competition development workshop in Dubbo, in preparation for the Zone Final which will be held on 25th February 2023.
Grace has been involved with the Yass Show for many years, especially the horse section for which she has been judging. She feels it is important to represent her community and to showcase the Young Woman competition for future entrants in years to come.

2014 Yass Showgirl - Emily Witt
2013/2014 Showgirl, Emily Witt, through winning the zone final, had the opportunity to compete at the 2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show, as one of the top 16 entrants (out of 500) for the state of NSW. Emily believes the experience was a once in a life time opportunity, with the chance to engage in State-wide rural activities, meet agricultural and community leaders, including the Governor of NSW. The experience gave Emily the ability to develop personal skills, as well as confidence and understanding of current issues.
As a past showgirl Emily encourages young women of Yass Valley, aged between 18 – 25, to actively become involved in the local community, with Showgirl being the perfect opportunity.
